I recently went through a purging exercise of a bunch of lists I somehow joined over the past year or so. It was a long and tedious process, but I'm better off for it, and so is my inbox. I'm not overly concerned on how I got on these lists, but rather the steps needed to unsubscribe from them. Generally, it's pretty quick - just click on a link to unsubscribe, then confirm I do indeed wish to unsubscribe. Two steps. Done.
It's alarming then that it can take up to 10 days to remove my email address from the list. Really? I imagine it didn't take 10 days to register for the list.
Having set up several lists, it seems to me these folks are just hoping after 10 days, I'll forget that I unsubscribed and when I receive the next message, I'll think differently. That's an odd thing to do, especially when it's really simple to set up an automated opt out process when these lists / campaigns are created.
These should be automated from the start. I click opt out, I should receive confirmation that I will no longer receive messages from list, starting now.
